Is a kid's adventure book teaching acceptance and compassion ahead of it's time?

Every day I speak to people about Laehli & the Elephants. Recently the feedback I've received is a bit concerning to me. Several people have asked why I care about what happens in Thailand, a few have asked why it matters if kids learn about animals that are going to become extinct and I've had at least a couple ask why "normal" kids should read books about a deaf kid. Wow. If I had not already been concerned about humanity and how we treat the rest of the beings on the planet I certainly would have become concerned after all of this.

One film investor who I've been in contact with about the animated movie based (loosely) on the book series has mentioned his belief this project just might be ahead of it's time. Perhaps he is correct. Honestly I don't understand why people wouldn't want their kids to learn about how important it is to care about the environment, those who are different than they are or compassion for those less fortunate. Personally I've learned much more from those who appear different than I am than those who are the same. I believe that's true of all of us. Why someone would not realize that protecting one part of the world truly protects us all is beyond me.

To say I'm disappointed at this point would be an understatement. I've always held the belief that people are good at heart. Perhaps I've been wrong. Don't misunderstand me, this isn't only about my project, it's about humanity as a whole. It really seems as though those of us who are trying to do good in the world are vastly outnumbered by those who simply don't care. Not caring is actually worse than being negative. When someone reaches the point of truly not caring they don't take a stand on anything. Maybe that's the problem.

So I will continue talking about Laehli & the Elephants. I will continue trying my best to show people how important it is to teach the children of today to care. I will continue asking people to support this project, review the books, share posts and simply to care about our world and all the beings inhabiting it. It's really important. Please, care.
